TALLAHASSEE, FL. (WTXL) - Big Brothers Big Sisters in Tallahassee receives a big donation to help continue a special program at Godby High School.
Comcast gave the organization $20,000 to allow Godby students to continue participating in a technology enhanced mentoring program. The program is aimed at getting the students ready for college and future careers. Officials say, the "Mentor 2.0 Program" creates a unique opportunity for students.
Alva Striplin, Interim CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Big Bend says, "We are one of only 12 agencies around the entire country that have this specific program. And it's geared toward high school kids. A lot of mentoring programs focus their efforts on 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 year-old; but this program is specific to high schoolers. And it's all about what's the next step in your life. Are you prepared to go to college? How are your grades? How are your activities? And just establishing that relationship with a mentor to help them beyond high school."
According to Godby High's principal, the program has contributed to lower drop out rates, better lifestyle choices, and a more positive attitude among students who participated.
This is the third year in a row that Comcast handed out the grant.
