DELTONA, Fla. (AP) — Officials in Volusia County say a sheriff's deputy fatally shot a man in the face while serving a warrant.
The shooting happened Wednesday morning in Deltona.
The sheriff's office reports that deputies were serving the warrant when 26-year-old Derek Cruice resisted a deputy. The deputy fired one shot, hitting Cruice in the face. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.
Sheriff Ben Johnson says Cruice was listed in the search warrant as the subject of an ongoing narcotics investigation. Cruice was one of six adults — four men and two women — in the house when deputies arrived.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the shooting. The Daytona Beach News-Journal (http://bit.ly/1EkDG8P) reports that the deputy has been placed on administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.
