TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — A child under the age of five remains hospitalized in Leon County after contracting the coronavirus, as cases in children continue to skyrocket across the state.

Nearly 8,000 children across the state of Florida have tested positive in just eight days.

Weeks before schools open, the number of new cases continue to surge.

As more children get sick, legislators are urging Governor Ron DeSantis to re-think opening schools and consider a statewide mask mandate.

"He and the president have failed every child and teacher and educator in Florida and put them at risk because of their reckless, reckless efforts to reopen schools," said State Representative Donna Shalala (D).

White House coronavirus task force coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx said scientists are still studying how quickly children under the age of 10 can spread the virus since many of them have stayed home and away from their peers during peak months of this pandemic.
