TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A convicted Florida felon was arrested in Tallahassee after an armed robbery attempt at a gas station.

Kendrick Herring, 28, was arrested by the Leon County Sheriff's Office on April 26.

On Nov. 17, 2016 around 10 p.m., the Leon County Sheriff's Office responded to a call at a Dollar General in reference to Herring robbing a cashier at gunpoint.

When deputies arrived, the scene was clear and the suspect had already fled.

The victim said he observed Herring "rush" into the store demanding money. According to the victim, Herring told him to "give me the money, I need money right now."

The police report states, Herring then pointed his handgun at the victim at "close range" and told him to "open the register."

The victim told Herring he couldn't open the register. The victim believes that's when Herring fired his gun into the air and ran out of the store.

During deputies initial investigation, they found a casing from the semi-automatic handgun inside the store.

Deputies learned the gun was used in other reported robberies to LCSO and the Tallahassee Police Department.

After deputies reviewed the camera footage from the store, they saw Herring with a Michael Kors backpack that had been used in several other reported robberies in Leon County as well.

On Nov. 18, 2016, the Tallahassee Police Department responded to four additional robberies that may have involved Herring.

On Nov. 19, 2016, TPD during a joint briefing with LCSO, indicated they saw a vehicle of interest in surveillance footage from the robberies on Nov. 18.

On the same day, TPD responded to a robbery attempt at a Sunoco gas station. When TPD arrived, they found another suspect, Matthew Brown, dead inside the store.

TPD learned that Brown was actually the suspect in the four robberies on Nov. 18.

The police report states, Brown was shot by the clerk during the robbery attempt.

According to the police report, TPD then located the vehicle suspected to be involved in these robberies across the street and found Herring pacing back and forth outside the car.

Probable cause was established to detain Herring and while talking to TPD Herring acted nervous.

Officers smelled the odor of marijuana coming from Herring, so when officers searched him, TPD found two grams of marijuana inside his pocket.

Based on the evidence, Brown was ultimately arrested by TPD on Nov. 19, 2016 for homicide during the commission of a felony due to the death of Brown during the robbery attempt.

Herring was not initially charged for the Dollar General incident so LCSO could gather more evidence for their case.

LCSO obtained searched warrants to get DNA swabs from Herring which were sent to FDLE for examination.

Through continued investigation, LCSO determined the car used in the incidents was registered to a woman.

While talking to LCSO, she said she regularly loaned her car to Herring.

She told investigators, that on Nov. 19, 2016, she loaned her car to a person she only knows as "BD," but that "BD" was an associate of Herring.

After processing the evidence and getting a match for the DNA on the clothing worn and the magazine of the gun at the Dollar General incident, Herring was arrested by LCSO.

He is being charged with attempted armed robbery, firearm during the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and discharging a firearm in public.
