TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a one-on-one meeting Monday.

Our WTXL political contributor Dr. Richard Murgo shared a little more perspective on how unusual a 90 minute 1-on-1 meeting is between leaders.

"It is unprecedented. In the past, there has always been staffers in those meetings. This keeps the president in line in terms of what he says, both presidents in line in terms of what they say, so this was completely unprecedented," said Murgo. "This was the only reports we have as to what took place as per Mr. Putin and per Mr Trump and obviously both can but it into context that they want to."

Murgo says that the relationship between the U.S. and Russia has been strained.

"Historically, even through the time during the cold when it was the Soviet Union. We have had a very conflicted relationship, as these have been our adversaries," said Murgo. "Obviously there has been espionage between both countries. There's been human right violations, obviously with the Soviet Union when it was that and now Russia continues to be."

President Trump said that relations between the two nations were at a historic low point prior to Monday's meeting but says the relations have taken a positive turn as a result of the meeting.
