BRADENTON, Fla. (AP) - Police say a Bradenton firefighter is dead after a standoff with officers following a domestic situation.
Bradenton police Chief Michale Radzilowski says 50-year-old Donald "Donnie" Wendt came out of a house Sunday night, threatening to kill himself and his sister. He says Wendt had two pointed two guns at officers.
The chief says an officer fired one shot and killed Wendt.
There were few details about what occurred at the home before police were called.
The Bradenton Herald (http://bit.ly/1xtJplF) Wendt joined the Bradenton Fire Department in 2003 and less than a year later was deployed to Iraq for 13 months with the U.S. Army Reserve. He was awarded a Bronze Star for his service.
Fire Chief Charles Edwards says there are no words to express the sadness the department feels.
