TALLAHASSEE Fla. (WTXL) - Palm Beach billionaire Jeff Greene has entered the race for Florida governor.
"I welcome Jeff Greene to this race to become Florida’s next Governor," fellow gubernatorial hopeful Andrew Gillum said in a statement. "As the son of a construction worker and bus driver, and still the only non-millionaire Democrat in our primary, I believe Florida Democrats need a true champion for working people as their nominee. I look forward to continuing this contest of ideas with Jeff in the field."
Greene, 63, is worth an estimated $3.8 billion, according to Forbes, and owns 3,500 apartments in Los Angeles, 2,500 units in Florida, five homes and three Manhattan buildings.
His paperwork was filed Friday with the Division of Elections.
Greene ran unsuccessfully for the Senate in 2010 but lost the Democratic primary to Kendrick Meek, then a congressman, in a seat won by Republican Marco Rubio.
Others vying for the Democratic nomination in the race to succeed Gov. Rick Scott, who cannot seek re-election due to term limits, include former U.S. Congresswoman Gwen Graham, Tallahassee mayor Andrew Gillum, former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine, and Orlando entrepreneur Chris King.
