TAMPA, Fla. (WTXL) - An accused serial killer in Tampa will undergo a mental evaluation.

Attorneys for Howell Donaldson the 3rd say he suffers from mental health issues.

They had previously filed a motion asking his mental status be evaluated by a specialists.

In court Wednesday, the judge appointed a doctor to evaluate the 24-year-old.

"If there were some issues which a defense attorney deems could be present, obviously they are just attorneys and not doctors," said AJ Alvarez, Donaldson's attorney, "so they have doctors explore whether or not there's some sort of mental event taking place that needs to be raised before the court."

Donaldson is accused of killing four people at random back in the fall and spreading terror through the historic neighborhood of Seminole heights.

His parents have been on house arrest. The courtroom is the only time they get to see their son.
