Your Career: Aquatic Veterinarian

Posted

Tallahassee, Fla. (WTXL)--Time to put your love and compassion for animals into practice as a veterinarian. Not just any pet doctor, an aquatic vet. Dr. Sherri Kasper from the Animal Hospital and Pet Resort at Southwood joined us this morning to discuss what it takes to break into the business.

Kasper specializes in fish medicine. While there aren't any requirements for that specialization, she recommends that physicians get certified in fish medicine and stay sharp on those skills through continuing education.

"Patience and experience in the field is key", Kasper adds.

The veteran veterinarian says fish medicine is a great discipline to break into because very few doctors are willing to practice on fish. That in turn leaves aquarist to treat their own pets without the background in some basic medical concepts like microbiology, immunology, anatomy and herd health.
