TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)--Some students are taking journeys of a lifetime for year, between high school and college before beginning class at Florida State University.

Education experts we talked to say gap years offer students a diverse learning experience, but some people have misconceptions.

Florida State University is now the second public university in the country to offer students financial support for taking a gap year.

More than 30 students applied this year. Eight were offered scholarships. Seven took them. We talk to one student who is making her way around the world.

Emma Jo McAuliffe left August 8th for the Philippines. She'll be there for 15 days. Then she'll go to Cambodia for a couple of months and volunteer at an orphanage, but that's only the beginning of her gap year.

She eventually hopes to get over to Africa and to East Europe.

McAuliffe just graduated from Leon High School. She says this gap year will help her evaluate her goals in life. Click here to learn more about the programs that are accredited.
