CAIRO, Ga. (WTXL) — A temporary shelter is opening in Cairo to help tornado victims who have only just begun to pick up the pieces.
The National Weather Service has confirmed that an EF-2 tornado hit the area Sunday night, bringing maximum winds of approximately 120 mph to the area.
According to Richard Phillips, the director of emergency management for Grady County, the American Red Cross opened a “warming” shelter at the Ag Center in Cairo Monday at 1 p.m.
Snacks are available at the temporary shelter and hours of operation will depend upon usage.
As for people looking to help the city of Cairo, Trey Gainous with Grady Co Chamber of Commerce is asking people NOT to go into south Cairo as they are fighting traffic instead of focusing on repairs.
Any tornado victims in need of a free tarp for their damaged roof should contact the Grady County Commission office at (229) 377-1512.
