NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP)-- Newtown is trying to keep Sandy Hook Elementary school students occupied with fun activities while they remain out of school following the massacre at their school.

Officials from the town, school district and nonprofit agencies have sponsored pizza parties, field trips and toy giveaways since the shooting two weeks ago that killed 20 students and six adults.

The Newtown Youth Academy, a nonprofit sports center, opened its doors to all kids in town at no cost. But from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.lastweek, it was reserved just for Sandy Hook Elementary students.

University of Connecticut psychologist Julian Ford says it's important during the grieving process for the students to play and understand that life will go on.

The students return to school late next week.
