MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL)-- A city in Gadsden County is posting to the web, in hopes of raising money for the city. WTXL ABC27 sat down with the city manager of Midway and found out how the city is trying to cover extra costs.
GoFundMe is an online crowd funding website that helps people raise money for everything from funeral costs and surgeries to vacations and music production.
But now the fundraising platform is being used to raise money for a city in need.
The city of Midway generates close to $3 million each year in property taxes, but after Gadsden County and the Gadsden County School District get their cut.. the city only sees about $500,000.
City Manager, Deborah Inman-Johnson says it's hard to run a city on such a meager budget and to keep up with the rapidly growing population.
"With the latest census data we found we are the second largest city in Gadsden County, even as young as we are with the population growth we've been experiencing lately. But we have to have the infrastructure, the services and all of that in place while we're growing and while more revenue is coming in to continue encourage that growth, so it's bringing in jobs and opportunities for the citizens here," explained Inman-Johnson.
Midway's GoFundMe goal is $250,000.
The city already has a grant and loan for almost $300,000 that would go towards the development of a senior center. However, the city can't touch that money until it raises at least 90 thousand dollars of its own money.
The money is needed to hire recreation staff for 1 of the city's 3 parks, maintain patrol cars and improve infrastructure.
