Tallahassee, Fla. (WTXL)--College is back in session and football season is getting underway. With all of that going on, the risk for accidents increases; specifically pedestrian accidents.

According to the Tallahassee Police Department, 13 people have been killed in pedestrian accidents since 2011 with most of them taking place near or around college campuses and nightlife.

Officials say pedestrians should keep these four things in mind when traveling around the Capitol City:

  • Follow all signs and police instructions
  • Use crosswalks; It is illegal to cross anywhere other than designated crosswalks
  • Only cross the streets in well lit areas
  • Don't dart between two parked cars
