TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)-- A group of fire academy students teamed up Sunday to raise money, in order to honor firefighters who have paid the ultimate price.

Fire Academy Class 0-17 held a car wash at Cody's Restaurant. Each class is required by the academy to organize a project which will raise money for a local charity.

Class 0-17 chose to honor those who came before them. Proceeds form the car wash benefit the American Red Cross, as well as, the Florida Firefighter Memorial Monument.

Two students explained how important it is to give back to those who gave it all.

Sangregoro: "Events like this are important for us because the fire service isn't only about putting out fires and helping on medical calls. It's about giving back to your community. And being apart of your community in more ways than just EMS," said Gregorio Sangregoro.

Another student added, "We're so fortunate to be doing it here in Tallahassee. Because Tallahassee has been a great supporter of the Fire Academy and the fire department," said William Fox.

The memorial fund also helps the families of fallen firefighters.
