FORT PIERCE, Fla. (AP) - A Port St. Lucie woman has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for charges related to a hit-and-run crash that killed a teenage girl.
Media outlets report that 48-year-old Ivette Nieves-Barsuglia pleaded no contest Monday to vehicular homicide and two related charges, but Judge James McCann adjudicated her guilty and gave her the maximum sentence.
On April 7, 2014, Nieves-Barsuglia struck 18-year-old Dayanna Gil with her car as the teen walked to school. Gil died a week later.
Nieves-Barsuglia told police she didn't realize she had hit the teen.
Defense attorney Joshua Deckard argued for a sentence of one year in county jail followed by 10 years' probation, pointing to Nieves-Barsuglia's unblemished record and her cooperation with police.
Assistant State Attorney Brandon White, however, said Nieves-Barsuglia "went to great lengths to cover up her crime."
