FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) - A South Florida teen has been sentenced to three years of probation for an accidental shooting that left his friend dead.
The Sun Sentinel reports that the 16-year-old boy was sentenced to probation and 250 hours of community service Tuesday after pleading guilty to firing a weapon in an occupied dwelling. He had been facing a manslaughter charge.
Authorities say the teen and his friend, 14-year-old Charlie Martin, were at the teen's Cooper City home in July 2015 when they found a gun in the garage that belonged to the teen's stepfather. The boys were fiddling with the gun when it fired and fatally struck Martin.
