SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — A developer is offering local officials in Georgia's oldest city a donation of 863 acres of protected forest and wetlands.
Members of Savannah's City Council aren't sure they should accept the gift, considering what it would cost to manage the property down the road.
The offer calls for Savannah to use the property on its west side as a wildlife habitat and nature preserve. The Savannah Morning News reports it would be the largest park in the city limits.
David Keating, the city's real estate director, told council members it would cost about $200,000 over the next two years to secure the site, maintain roads and set up picnic and camp sites. Several council members said the money could be better spent elsewhere
No decision has been made.
