Arson Suspected in Fire at Historic Florida Church

Posted

CENTURY, Fla. (AP) - Officials are trying to determine whether a fire that destroyed a Florida Panhandle church was intentionally set.

The Pensacola News Journal (http://on.pnj.com/2dSEA4L ) reports fire broke out early Sunday at Wesley Chapel Church in Century. The church wasn't currently being used because it was damaged by a tornado that hit the area in February.

Authorities say Sunday's fire destroyed what was left of the historic building.

The congregation has been holding services at the Council on Aging of West Florida's senior center since the tornado.

Elvin Mitchell, who lives next to the church, tells the newspaper the "church right now is nothing but a foundation."

The State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating. Officials say there is a reward of up to $2,500 for information that leads to an arrest.
