TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Do you know what a "Food Desert" is?

According to the CDC, "Food Deserts are areas that lack access to affordable foods to make up a healthy diet." FoodsPower.org adds, "They're primarily located in areas where access to affordable food is limited or nonexistent."

Right here in Tallahassee, one local business is trying to help with that growing problem.

"These are children that literally don't have a lot of food to eat and over the weekends," said Dale Tadlock, the president of Tadlock Roofing. "So getting the proper nutrition is gonna help them perform better in school but also make them healthier individuals."

Dale Tadlock and other members of Tadlock Roofing are gathering canned goods and non perishables food items for Godby High School's food pantry.

According to the Leon County School District, the high school has been collecting food for the past couple of years for their pantry, which takes around $4,000 to run each year.

"We have people that are hungry that are in need that may not get a meal outside of the the school day," said Chris Petley, a Leon County Schools spokesperson. "We have people who are suffering all over community not in any specific region but right now we're starting with Godby High School."

Tadlock Roofing has already collected over 150 of these food items and they're hoping to collect $2,000 by the end of this week, to help children in need.

"Most people are like myself, they have no idea we have a need in this community, the food deserts like over in the Godby area we're trying to meet a need there," said Tadlock. "I think there are a lot of other business owners and leaders in this community that would meet needs much like this."

In addition to food collected during the two week drive, Tadlock Roofing will contribute an additional $2,000 check to help the Godby High School food pantry.

The Power of 2 Food Drive ends July 27th. If you would like to donate you can drop off non-perishable items at Tadlock Roofing (502-C1 Capital Circle SE).
