BAINBRIDGE, GA (WTXL) - Bainbridge Public Safety is saying there was an explosion Wednesday morning that has killed one person.

BPS says on their Facebook page the explosion happened at Liquid Transfer Terminals, a Fertilizer Plant on 1025 Dickerson Street.

Officers say that several streets were evacuated as well as area factories but roadways were reopened after 5 p.m.

Authorities say a man who died was welding on the top of the tank which is what authorities believe caused the spark. A second person was on their way to continue the work when the explosion happened. That person is not reported to have suffered any injuries.

BPS says all Decatur County Elementary Schools were on lock-down until their regular release time, "...to ensure the safety of students and faculty from fumes as the chemical fire burns".

As of 2:30 p.m., BPS says the fire has been extinguished but that the facility is still smoking and authorities are waiting for the chemicals to burn down.
