TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Health officials all over the world are taking time Tuesday to share the dangers of contracting HIV/AIDS.

Here in Leon County, the focus was not just on young adults, but seniors as well.

The Florida Department of Health says seniors are at risk because they're at a time of their lives when they're looking for companionship.

Chris Tittel from the department of Health in Leon County also says many women don't use proper protection after they stop having children.

"The idea that folks over a certain age don't engage in sexual intercourse anymore, which is far from the truth," said Tittel. "So I think there's a lot of misinformation, a lot of stigma associated with HIV that would make people feel more isolated than they already feel."

Now, here's the bottom line from the presentation: If you don't know your status, health officials urge you to get tested.

They say the best way to take care of yourself is to know and not ignore the feeling that something might be wrong.
