KEY LARGO, Fla. -- A mate on a dive boat from a Key Largo resort died while helping four divers who were drifting away from the vessel.

The Monroe County Sheriff's office says the divers had been in the water for about 15 minutes Thursday evening when the captain decided the current was too strong and called them back.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin says 59-year-old Steven Kipp donned a mask, snorkel and fins and jumped into the water to take a line to the drifting divers. He gave the line to the first two divers and was swimming toward the other two when he became unresponsive.

He was brought back onto the boat where CPR was performed. U.S. Coast Guard crews took him to shore. He was declared dead a short time later.
