Decatur Georgia--WTXL Road Trip ventured to the Oak City Cemetery in Decatur Georgia.
Historian, Roslyn Palmer says, "There's so much history behind the rod iron gates, you can see gravestones from the 1800's. We have former movie stars buried here, we have a former governor buried here, a famous photographer buried here."
Prior to its establishment in 1852, the Oak City Cemetery was home to an Indian village.
In 1878, the west section of the cemetery became one of the first Jewish cemeteries in South Georgia.
Oscar nominated actress Mariam Hopkins was laid to rest at Oak City Cemetery in the 1970's and in the 1980's the 72nd Governor of Georgia, Marvin Griffin was buried behind the gates.
A rich history lays behind the cemetery gates that just keeps attracting visitors.
"We have a self guided tour people can take. Pick up the brochure at our visitor's center. It really has become a tourist attraction..people will come to learn about something their studying or their family...it's just a place that keeps our history alive," Says Palmer.
