TALLAHASSEE (WTXL) -- This discussion will highlight the latest information about each system in the tropics.
T.D. 9: Tropical depression 9 has 35 mph sustained winds and is continuing to move slowly west at 2 mph. Intensification is expected over the next day or so. This afternoon, the depression will turn towards the north-northeast and continue that way over the next few days. There is still the potential for the storm to move further towards the west.
T.D. 8: Tropical depression 8 has winds at 35 mph and is moving northeast at 5 mph. Most models are showing a slight intensification within the next 48 hours. The forecast track will continue to be moving towards the northeast and move further away from the United States.
Gaston: Hurricane Gaston is a category 3 hurricane with 120 mph sustained winds. It will continue to move towards the northeast at 9 mph. Gaston is forecast to intensify slightly over the next day or two before it moves into unfavorable conditions and from there will weaken. It is not a threat to the United States and will continue to push into the Atlantic Ocean. It is a possible threat to the Azores as a tropical storm.
Tropics: A broad area of low pressure near the Cape Verde Islands has a 40% chance of development over the next 5 days. Dry air will hinder its chances for intensification in the short term, but long term it could begin to gain strength as it moves into a more favorable environment.
