MIDWAY, Fl. (WTXL) -- The tropical disturbance (Invest 99L) over the Lesser Antilles has a 70% chance of developing into a tropical depression or tropical storm in the next five days. Model disagreement persists with the disturbance, but one thing they all agree on is the eventual progression toward the Gulf of Mexico. Many factors can help or hinder the invest, such as land interaction with Hispaniola and Cuba and the hot waters in the Bahamas. Interests in the Gulf coast as well as Florida all the way up to the Carolinas should keep a close eye on the system.
As of the 5am advisory, winds are sustained at 70 mph, meaning that the system is closing in on Category 1 Hurricane Strength. It is still expected to turn to the northwest and soon, the north over the open Atlantic, but it may strengthen even further.
