MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) -- Tropical Storm Ida remain the only named system in the Atlantic basin. Its prognosis has not drastically changed in terms of future strength and movement. While still slowly moving east with ragged organization and limited strength, the storm is forecast to start moving north or north-northwest by the weekend. Once the upper winds relax by then, some modest increase in intensity is possible, but there is still no expectation for Ida to become a threat to any areas of land.
There has been persistence in forecast trends for the weekend and early next week in the Gulf of Mexico, showing an area of vast tropical moisture moving north from the Yucatan region or the Bay of Campeche. While the main impact -- if this were to come to pass -- would be a general increase in rain coverage, a low-pressure center may form and has some potential for further development, depending on atmospheric conditions early next week. It is too early to assume a tropical system would form in this region, but the evolution of this pattern will be monitored closely.
