On this day in 1987, according to the National Weather Summary, strong gusting winds and frigid air rushed into the eastern U.S. Gale winds slammed the Mid-Atlantic and Northern Atlantic coast. Some winds gusted to 50 mph in Manteo, NC and Cape Hatteras, NC.
