MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) -- Tropical Depression Six had maintained its movement farther into the wide-open North Atlantic waters, posing no immediate harm to land. However, it had strengthened into a tropical storm Wednesday afternoon.
Tropical Storm Fiona's highest sustained winds were 40 mph, and the system was moving to the west-northwest at 16 mph late Wednesday night.
Despite its new status as a tropical storm, moderately dry air has hindered its strengthening efforts. Limited intensification through the weekend is expected because of the general void of major moisture and a forecast pick-up in upper-level winds in the Atlantic waters.
