UPDATE: Erika will be slow in strengthening, Florida still at risk

MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) -- Tropical Storm Erika continues to encounter some harsh conditions along the eastern Caribbean Sea in the form of dry air and some strong wind shear. The storm is still expected to maintain intensity as it approaches Puerto Rico and Hispaniola later Thursday night into Friday morning. The storm will likely not turn into a hurricane until it approaches the Bahamas and encounters warmer water temperatures.

Tropical storm warnings exist along the eastern Caribbean and include the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, and eastern portions of the Dominican Republic.
