MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) -- Hurricane Edouard reached Category 3 major hurricane status Tuesday, strengthening over the open Atlantic and producing peak wind speeds of 115 mph.  The forecast for Edouard calls for the storm to maintain its current intensity for about another day before gradually weakening over cooler waters and encountering faster upper-level winds.  Edouard is the first major hurricane in the Atlantic basin since Sandy on Oct. 25, 2012.

None of the disorganized waves of moisture in the northern Gulf, the southern Caribbean, or the convergence zone in the lower north Atlantic show indications of immediate strengthening.
