TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Just as one tropical system is weakening away, another has the potential to form in the open Atlantic Ocean.
Tropical Storm Philippe has now dissipated into remnants in the western Atlantic Ocean, about 300 miles south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. This remnant low is continuing to move in a north northeast direction at 46 mph with sustained winds of 60 mph. It is expected that this storm will continue to be sheared away and merge with a cold front in the next 12 hours.
The second area of interest that we are watching is a disturbance about 1000 miles east southeast of Bermuda. This area of low pressure could gradually gain tropical characteristics by the middle of the week as is continues meandering in the central Atlantic Ocean. In the next five days, there is a 40% chance of development.
