MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) -- The February full moon phase, which occurs Tuesday evening, has a nickname more suitable for colder climates, but is applied even in the warmer reaches of Florida and south Georgia.
The Full Snow Moon is seen during what's traditionally the snowiest part of the winter season. Of course, for locations on the Gulf of Mexico, snow is a rarity, but chilly February trends can keep the nighttime air rather nippy in the extra moonlight.
The Old Farmer's Almanac states that Native American names for the full moon this month include the Hunger Moon, since hunting is increasingly difficult in the cold; and the Bone Moon, because people gnawed on bones as a substitute for food.
