MEDART (WTXL) - The U.S. Forest Service is performing a prescribed burn in the Apalachicola National Forest on Friday. The burn will take place in Wakulla county west of U.S. Hwy 319 and 98 near the town of Medart. 1,844 acres of land will be burned.
When driving through these smokey areas with limited visibility, slow down and turn on the car's low beams. People living near these areas with breathing issues are encouraged to stay indoors and turn on their air conditioning. Counties that may encounter smokey conditions throughout the day because of the burn include Wakulla, southwest Leon, southern Gadsden, Liberty, and Franklin.
The purpose of these burns is to simulate fires that naturally occur while maintaining a controlled environment. The burn will eliminate vegetation build up and improve animals' natural habitats. The cold season is the best time of year to perform prescribed burns because pop-up thunderstorms occur less often compared to what is seen on a semi-daily basis during the summer months.
