FORT COLLINS, Colo. (WTXL) -- A team of meteorologists and researchers at Colorado State University that has been releasing seasonal outlooks of tropical storm and hurricane activity since 1984 will continue their efforts, at least for the time being.
The Tropical Meteorology Project, headed by Phil Klotzbach and William Gray, had planned on suspending their work in creating forecasts for tropical cyclone activity, according to a December statement, citing a loss of government grants which financed their project.
Over the past few months, Klotzbach has been able to secure sponsorships from an insurance company and an emergency response and recovery firm to allow the forecasting and analysis to continue. The Tropical Meteorology Project is scheduled to update its 2014 hurricane and landfall probability outlooks on Apr. 10, with two revised forecasts set for early June and early August.
In recent years, the team had provided updates on their outlook every two weeks during the more-active part of the season in late summer. However, these frequent predictions are not listed on their schedule.
