MIDWAY, Fl. (WTXL) -- Newly formed Tropical Storm Franklin isn't wasting time strengthening, with a newly issued HURRICANE WATCH in effect for parts of the Yucatan Peninsula.
As of the 5:00am ET advisory, Tropical Storm Franklin has sustained winds of 45 mph. The storm is moving to the WNW at 13 mph, poised to make landfall on the eastern half of the peninsula tonight into tomorrow morning as a tropical storm.
Though the forecast track has no direct indication of this storm becoming a hurricane, the potential for it to intensify into one is there. This storm will likely be NO threat to the United States.
In addition to Franklin, a disturbance in the Atlantic has struggled to intensify. This was the same disturbance that showed HIGH likelihood of development late last week as it traveled west of Africa. Now it has only a 20% chance of tropical development as it moves to the WNW in the open Atlantic, likely north of the Lesser Antilles.
