After a somewhat active period, the tropics are finally beginning to quiet down. The system we were monitoring in the Bay of Campeche has now moved into the northwestern Gulf of Mexico, where dry air and strong upper level winds are preventing any development. The system will merge with a frontal boundary in the next day or so, bringing tropical moisture and rain showers to much of the Gulf coast. Development is not likely in the Caribbean and the rest of the Atlantic basin through the end of this week.
