TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- The two areas in the tropics that we've been watching these past few days are still present, and slowly developing.
Starting with the disturbance that is sitting in the Gulf of Mexico...This area of low pressure still does not have a well defined center, but does have winds sustained at 35 kts (about 40 mph). These stronger winds extend out almost 200 miles to the north and east of the center. This disturbance has an 80% chance of formation in the next five days. At this time, it is sitting nearly stationary, but it is expected to continue moving in a north northwest direction later Monday night. The models are starting to come into agreement that this low pressure will continue tracking toward the Louisiana coastline, however, this forecast path could change. As this nears the coast, the Big Bend will likely see breezier winds and rain from this system.
Moving out to the second area of interest, we have Tropical Storm Bret. This storm is currently situated just off the coast of Venezuela moving west northwest at 25 mph. Over the next few days, this storm is expected to slow down. Tropical Storm Bret has sustained winds of 40 mph that extend out 80 miles north of the center. The storm is expected to weaken over the next several days into a tropical depression.
