MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) -- Hurricane Danny became the first major hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season Friday afternoon, but its span of time in the major strength category is likely to be brief. The wtxl.tv Hurricane Center provides more insight and analysis into Danny.
A broad upper feature over Bermuda has persisted for the last several days in the western Atlantic. There has been no significant signs of robust organization, but the potential does exist for the vast low to contract somewhat and acquire subtropical characteristics into early next week. Regardless of future development, the system is expected to stay in the Atlantic, eventually moving northeast.
To the east of Danny, a wave of moisture recently emerging off the west Africa coast is forecast to follow a similar path to Danny, in a light upper wind environment, with enough moisture associated with the disturbance to allow some slight strengthening south of the Cape Verde Islands through early next week.
The next names on the tropical storm list are Erika and Fred.
