MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) -- The tropical Atlantic basin is still active in terms of the number of systems developing, or potentially developing, but, as of Friday afternoon, there are no hurricanes to track.

However ...

  • Tropical Storm Julia is still being impacted by swift upper-level winds and a weak steering flow, causing the storm to move slowly and erratically.  It's about 200 miles from the South Carolina coast and will generally hold that position over the weekend.
  • Tropical Storm Ian has entered the colder northern latitudes of the Atlantic and has lost the warm-air characteristics of a tropical cyclone.
  • Tropical Storm Karl is situated a few hundred miles west of the Cape Verde region in the eastern Atlantic, tracking into a zone of stronger upper-level wind shear which will keep the storm from strengthening rapidly over the weekend.
  • A low-pressure wave is approaching the southeast Texas coast, bringing rain to that area but not much else in terms of tropical developments.
  • The latest tropical wave is emerging from the west Africa coast, and has medium-level chances to further develop through early next week as it starts its interaction with the east Atlantic waters.
