"Freezing Fog" Blankets Mid-Atlantic States

Freezing Fog near Charlotte, NC
Posted

CHARLOTTE, NC (WTXL) - Icicles dangle off trees and power lines in the North Carolina mountains where they have been below freezing for nearly an entire day. Thankfully, the slick conditions aren't causing widespread problems. Though officials say they are ready to quickly respond if any outages occur.

Most of that ice is not happening due to freezing rain, but rather by thick fog that freezes in the higher elevations. This is because the ground is so cold compared to the air temperature which takes the water molecules in the fog and freezes it. This is called freezing fog.
