TALLAHASSEE (WTXL) - An intense high pressure system that has its origins in the Arctic circle dipped well into the southeast Thursday morning allowing for a cold blast to pour into the Big Bend and south Georgia.
Temps quickly cooled off Wednesday night as a stiff wind out of the north and northeast picked up causing stinging wind chills by sunrise Thursday. The coldest spots were to the north and west of Tallahassee in which some communities saw single-digit wind chills.
The last time we saw conditions this frigid was last January during another Arctic air outbreak. Because of the biting chill, wind chill advisories and hard freeze warnings are issued until 1 pm Thursday afternoon.
The high pressure system that is bringing this cold air is sticking around once again tonight, though it'll be closer overhead which will limit the winds after sunset tonight. Though temps are anticipated to be back in the 20s with hard freezes likely, wind chills won't be a factor.
Once again, monitor the "4 P's" tonight:
- People: Check in on the elderly, especially those that don't have heaters.
- Pets: Bring in any pets. If it's too cold for you to be outside. It's too cold for our furry friends.
- Plants: Bring in any sensitive vegetation or widespread frost will likely kill the flowers.
- Pipes: Keep your faucets at a steady drip overnight to prevent them from freezing over or bursting.
