Cold Weather Damage

ATLANTA (AP) - Georgia's Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner says homeowners may be able to get financial help through their homeowners' policies if their homes are damaged by cold weather.

Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said in a statement that homeowners' insurance policies usually cover repairs to internal plumbing, floors and other belongings caused by frozen pipes.

Hudgens says damage from water entering home from outside - such as a broken water main - may not be covered. Hudgens says that type of damage is typically considered flood damage, which isn't covered by a standard homeowner's policy.

Hudgens says renters whose apartments are damaged by water from an upstairs neighbor will be covered under their renter's insurance policy. Hudgens says renters may be covered by their neighbor's policy if they're proven to be negligent.
