TALLAHASSEE (WTXL) - Elementary students at Buck Lake Elementary School learned the importance of weather balloons Thursday morning.

The balloons register valuable temperature, pressure and moisture data as they profile the the atmosphere from ground level all the way to the stratosphere.

The entire school was outside to view the spectacle. And this year, teachers broadcast this event on "Livestream" to 120 classrooms around the country reaching over 10,000 students. It was all anchored by two fifth grade students intertwined with tutorials on different pre-recorded science demonstrations.

Leon County school officials were on site, including Superintendent Jackie Pons.

The balloons soared nearly 110,000 feet into the atmosphere and were picked up by the western-flowing jet stream pushing the balloons to Pinetta, in northern Madison County. They fell back to earth hours later and were retrieved by school officials. Webcams attached to the balloons recorded video of the balloon soaring high into the sky.
