MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) -- Twenty-one names are set to be used to identify tropical systems that grow into tropical storms and hurricanes in 2015.
This list is one of six established for the Atlantic basin. This year's list was previously used in 2009.
Different lists are used in different parts of the world. The collection of names used across the Atlantic basin is comprised of names native to the region; in this case, a mix of English, Hispanic, and Creole Haitian names.
Names of storms that create incredible impact are retired after review by an international meteorological organizational committee. However, no notorious tropical storms or hurricanes occurred in 2009, so all the names used that year are again featured this year.
One noteworthy name reappearing in 2015 in Kate. A hurricane by the same name struck Mexico Beach in November 1985 and moved northeastward into the western Big Bend and south-central Georgia. Though damage was not catastrophic and deaths and injuries were limited in scope, the hurricane and its remnants triggered widespread hassles for the capital region, primarily from extensive power outages and numerous downed trees.
