PALM BEACH, Fla. (WTXL/NWS) -- On the evening of January 9th through midnight, several areas in Palm Beach county, Florida witnessed a massive rain event with record breaking accumulations in rainfall.

Boynton Beach and Lantana received over a foot of rain! Several other spots received over a foot including a site near Hypoluxo which picked up over 22 inches of rain!

The historic event was caused due to a variety of factors including a small disturbance from the north that stalled out near a stationary frontal boundary. That front kept south Florida in a very moisture-laden state that could support such a hefty rain event and when the disturbance approached, it slowed down and allowed the storms in the area to remain virtually motionless.  While the rain ended on the night of the 9th, the flooding lasted through the 10th with several flood warnings issued during the day.
