MADISON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A Valdosta man who forced his way through a sliding glass door died after a homeowner shot him in the chest, the Madison County Sheriff's Office said.
Anthony Lee Martin, 32, was found by deputies on the ground near the back-sliding glass door of a residence on Tuesday.
Major David Harper said that about 9:17 p.m. Tuesday deputies were dispatched to a residence on South SR. 53 in response to a 911 call reporting a burglary in progress.
Martin was suffering from a gunshot wound to his chest.
The residence was occupied by the homeowner, two additional adult females and a small child, the news release said.
Investigators determined that one of the females began receiving threatening text messages from Martin implying that he was on his way to the residence from Clyattville, Georgia.
A short time later, Martin arrived, parking his vehicle in the driveway of a vacant house next door to the residence.
Martin walked to the residence and forced entry through a sliding glass door.
The homeowner tried to push Martin back out the door when Martin reportedly raised a large kitchen-style knife in a stabbing motion, the news release said.
The homeowner fired one round from a handgun that struck Martin in the chest, ending the attack, the sheriff said.
Martin was transported to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, where he was pronounced dead.
The homeowner has not been charged with any crime, the news release said, and there were no other injuries reported to anyone else inside the residence.
