WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) — Troopers say a 17-year-old girl was killed during an overnight crash in Wakulla County on New Year's morning.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident happened on US 98 near Running Deer Lane at 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

FHP says a Nissan Versa was heading west on US 98, when the driver traveled off of the roadway.

After exiting the road, the Nissan then began to overturn and roll.

Troopers say while rolling, the Nissan crashed into a tree and came to a final stop on the side of the road.

FHP says a 17-year-old passenger succumbed to her injuries sustained during the crash.

Authorities identified the driver as 21-year-old Tony Piper.

Piper was transported to Tallahassee Memorial Healthcare with minor injuries.

The Florida Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office and Wakulla County Fire and EMS.

At this time, authorities say the investigation is ongoing and it is unknown if alcohol played a factor in the crash.
