'You'll be a white man property' tweet sparks outrage at NY college

BRIGHTON, NY (Spectrum News/CNN) - Students at Monroe Community College are calling out one of their own after a tweet that implied slavery would be re-instituted under President Donald Trump.

The college was notified about the message, which was sent from a student's Twitter account, after he said a Confederate flag he owned was vandalized.

"Shoutout to the n----- at mcc who vandalized my confederate flag… you'll be a white mans property soon enough give trump time," the tweet said.

School officials and students alike are condemning the post.

"I think everyone who saw that tweet found it offensive," MCC President Anne Kress said.

Students say they have not experienced this type of racism on campus, but do think the comment is indicative of where the country is right now.

"This message of hate is so outdated," former student Christopher Spencer said. "Four hundred plus years of this? Just because we're up here in Northern Rochester doesn't mean things like this don't occur."

The school has not taken disciplinary action against the student, but does plan to organize a meeting between the student and the school's diversity officer to discuss the impact social media can have on other people.

"This student was posting from a personal account, has freedom pf speech, has the right to say what he wishes," Kress said. "But we also have a right as an institution that said that's not MCC's value. That flag, those words, they have impact, they have weight, they have meaning. I'm not so sure the students understood that."

The student could not be reached for comment and his Twitter account is private.
