(CNN) - We do it so often it might be easy to take it for granted.
But walking can shed pounds, and according to at least one study can fight conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
There's a right way to do it to be most effective. Here's some takes from the experts.
Celebrity trainer David Kirsch has worked with high profile clients such as Jennifer Lopez and Kate Upton.
He says for beginners, start with 10,000 steps a day as the goal, then graduate to 15,000 or even 25,000 steps a day.
And add in calisthenics like jumping jacks every few minutes for toning.
Running coach Jeff Galloway created the run walk run interval method. So as you can imagine he's a fan of intervals.
He recommends running in intervals to burn more calories and boost appetite-suppressing hormones.
Galloway also believes easing into running lessens the risk of injury.
He says beginners should try jogging five to 10 seconds per minute for 10 minutes. Then see if you can graduate up to 30 minutes.
Then when you really feel like a challenge, shorten your walking breaks in between running.
